Act-Belong-Commit

Act-Belong-Commit is a community-based health promotion campaign that encourages people to take action to improve their mental health and wellbeing. This evidence-based campaign was developed primarily from research undertaken by Curtin University (WA) into people’s perceptions of mental health and the behaviours they believed protected and promoted good mental health.

As the brand name suggests, people can build positive mental health by keeping physically, mentally and socially active (Act); by keeping involved in family and community activities and participating in community events (Belong); and by taking on challenges or causes that provide meaning and purpose in their lives (Commit). There is substantial evidence that these three domains represent increasing levels of contribution to positive mental health (and in fact, to physical health).

At a community forum held on 16 September, guest speaker Prof. Rob Donovan, Professor of Behavioural Research in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Adjunct Professor of Social Marketing in the School of Marketing at Curtin University and principal of Mentally Healthy WA’s Act-Belong-Commit campaign shared his experiences during the development and rollout stages of this successful campaign to WA.

Act-Belong-Commit has now arrived in Queensland and will be officially launched at the Mental Health Week 2010 public event to be held at Roma Street Parklands on 10 October. Already, a high level of interest has been received with organisations keen to jump on board and become a founding member of this health campaign in Queensland.
