Queensland Alliance Consumer Participation
Inviting Consumer Participation
The Consumer Participation Project began operating at the Queensland Alliance in January 2007 and is now an integral part of the organization. The overall vision of the project is the development of new and innovative ways for people with mental health issues to participation in service delivery and community life in South East Queensland.
Our objectives are to:
•Support, promote and develop the skills of people with psychiatric disability to engage in consumer participation activities;
•Support, promote and develop a diverse range of models of consumer participation in non-government psychiatric disability support services;
•Produce resources (events, products, processes) that support consumers and service providers to improve consumer participation.
Jen Barrkman, Catherine Smith and Janice Crosbie are employed in the Unit. Our backgrounds are firmly grounded in the arts, community development and mental health so the project has explored creative and participative processes and activities for enhancing participation in services and community life. In our first year, 2007, we focused on learning about how participation is currently practiced in non government sector in south east Queensland and trialed a number of leadership development and participation initiatives.
These included
· Launch of Queensland Alliance: Speakers Bureau; Agents of Change;
· “Participation through Stories” leadership Development workshop series held in Brisbane and Gold Coast,
· Supporting the development of consumer run groups.
· Fostering connections and participation through activities such as Altered States Conference, “Stories of My Life” with Brisbane Playback Theatre, Mental Health Youth Summit.
Updates on the project will be posted regularly here, on the Queensland Alliance website.
