Rising to the Challenge: Community Mental Health and the 2010/11 Floods in Queensland
Queensland Alliance spoke to members in flood affected areas of Queensland and compiled the report “Rising to the Challenge: Community Mental Health and the 2010/11 Floods in Queensland.”
We have launched the report yesterday, and held a Media Conference with four member organisations and the AMA, to highlight the future mental health needs of affected communities.
The purpose of this work has been to ensure flood response funds are directed towards effective, community-based, locally lead social responses, not just physical infrastructure or clinical counseling services. Clinical counseling and physical infrastructure are important and we have supported extra expenditure in these areas. However we also know that communities will need support at the local level, and information on how to promote mental health in the community.
Highlighting mental health needs at this time also ensures community mental health programs are not cut when Governments are looking to make savings.
Please go here to see the article by Annie Guest for ABC News Mental health groups face breakdown in flood's wake.
We have also sent this report to the Premier, Deputy Premier, Minister for Disability Services and the Federal Minister for Mental Health. Please feel free to distribute this report to business and government representatives in your area. You may also wish to promote this report when talking to local politicians about the Pre-Budget Submission.
Wednesday night on the 7:30 report on ABC TV, Jacaranda Clubhouse featured highlighting the need for support for community organisations. Please find the footage at this link. The story is entitled Emotional fallout.
We thank all members that participated in the production of this report.
Please find attached report below. Any questions please call Queensland Alliance on 07 3252 9411
