The recent floods and Tropical Cyclone Yasi have caused considerable damage to some not-for-profit non-government organisations. In recognition of this, the Queensland Government is making available assistance to affected charities and non-profit organisations under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) with the Commonwealth Government.
Additional consultations regarding the Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) initiative and the design of the Flexible Care Packages for People with Severe Mental Illness initiative
As you would be aware, the majority of stakeholder consultation workshops relating to the directions proposed in the review of ATAPS and also, the implementation of the Flexible Care Packages for People with Severe Mental Illness initiative, have now been held in each state and territory.
In 2010, the Queensland Attorney-General asked the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) to conduct an independent evaluations of the implementation and effects of the Queensland Police Service's revised Taser policy, training and monitoring practices. These reforms arose out of the recommendations of a joint QPS-CMC review of Tasers in 2009.
The Coalition’s mental health policy, announced today, is a comprehensive and well-targeted policy which will provide greater accountability, enhanced research capabilities and greater investment in measures to help people with mental health problems transition back into the workforce.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Community Services, Julie Collins, today announced the Gillard Government will provide over $16 million to around 60 community projects across Australia to strengthen vulnerable communities and support disadvantaged Australians.
From 1 July 2011, community organisations funded under the Community Investment Program, will have their funding extended and increased to account for indexation, for three years to 30 June 2014.
TRAUMA experts yesterday warned of the potential for victims of Queensland's summer of sorrow to turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with their mental anguish.
Psychologist David Forbes, of the Australian Centre for Post-traumatic Mental Health, said people experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder or depression might use substances to try to dampen feelings of anxiety.

Many families find that getting and keeping a job is difficult for a person with a disability and many people do not get the opportunity to experience work.

The use of new social media – Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter is exploding. Over 9 million Australians are now users of these media. A recent study showed that up to 97% of Australians aged 16-17 use at least one social networking site. New applications for smart phones are appearing daily and support hundreds of activities in business and in our personal lives. Gaming – with platforms such as Xbox, Wii and Playstation – have become commonplace in Australian homes and are involving adults as well as youth and children in hours of ‘play’ each week.

The Mental Health Council of Tasmania Inc (MHCT) is the peak organisation representing the community mental health sector in Tasmania at a state and national level.
We are looking for a Workforce Development Officer to liaise with the mental health and training sectors to achieve mutually agreeable outcomes, performing research and providing analysis of the training and development needs of the community mental health sector.
