People using challenging behaviours are likely to be responding to situations they are finding difficult to manage - often not having the appropriate means to manage these situations using positive behaviours. A commonly misunderstood principal of behaviour analysis is that "Every behaviour serves a purpose" ... that is ... every behaviour is happening to assist a person to handle a situation they are finding difficult to negotiate. Functional Behaviour Assessment is a process that aims to look beyond the behaviour itself, enabling carers to identify all factors associated with the occurrence of an unwanted behaviour.
Objectives
This programme is designed to teach professionals and carers who work with individuals using "Challenging Behaviours", to develop valuable assessment tools to effectively identify and understand the reasons why these unwanted behaviours are occurring. This is an essential step that MUST occur prior to effective Positive Behavioural Interventions being developed and implemented (covered in course entitled "Positive Behavioural Interventions for People Using Challenging Behaviours " - PBI). All course participants will leave equipped with the knowledge of all the required steps to conduct and efficiently use a Functional Behavioural Assessment in their home or work setting.
