Minister for Disability Services and Multicultural Affairs
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk
07/07/2010
North West Queensland will benefit from a $283,728 boost to home and community care, Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk and Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan said.
Ms Palaszczuk said seven organisations in Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Burketown, Hughenden and Camooweal would share in the extra funding through the Home and Community Care (HACC) program.
The joint State-Commonwealth HACC program provides basic maintenance and support services to aged people and those with disabilities and their carers.
"This extra funding will deliver more home support services to ageing Queenslanders and people with a disability in the North West," Ms Palaszczuk said.
"It will give them help with everyday tasks like mowing the lawn, preparing meals and housecleaning.
"Nurses and allied health professionals will also deliver more services to people in their own homes, such as administering medication and providing podiatry and occupational therapy."
Mrs Kiernan said the funding boost was a win for remote and isolated communities in the state's North West and a sign of the Bligh Government's commitment to regional Queensland.
"It will help to meet the needs of North West Queensland's ageing population," she said.
"The extra funds will go to organisations with a strong track record of helping people to remain living independently in their own homes for as long as possible.
"There's funding for day centre activities like exercise and healthy eating classes, as well as a boost for transport services to help people remain active in their communities.
The organisations to
receive the extra funding are:
•Blue Care Mount Isa - $120,138
•North West Isolated Care (Mount Isa) - $16,792
•North and West Queensland Primary Health Care (Mount Isa) - $34,178
•Blue Care Cloncurry - $21,978
•Burke Shire HACC Program (Burketown) - $6,937
